Your 1986 300 ZX might die because of a lack of fuel because of clogged fuel filters or because of a damaged fuel sending unit. You might also have a problem with the fuel lines.

On the fuel sending unit there may be one ground wire going into the tank. On the inside of the tank there are two ground wires. One goes to the sending unit, and the other to the fuel pump. One of those ground wires may be faulty.
