Chocolate syrup is what the oil really is in "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, oil was flammable. It also did not cooperate with filming and was not at all photogenic. The film makers chose chocolate syrup instead, for a dark, heavy, rich look to the liquid that keeps the Tin Woodman going.
No his is not really a wizard. He is an ordinary man that has some skill with equipment and can throw his voice. He was a balloonist that got blown to Oz.
