I just purchased a 1977 merc 7.5 horse and the mechanic said to use 4 ounces of oil per gallon of gas.
50-1. I just bought a boat with this engine...how do you like it. What problems do you have if any? Are parts easy to get (it seems as though they are not!) Thanks
The 1977 model, 20 hp Mercury outboard, requires a 50:1 fuel to oil ratio.
1977 50:1
1977 according to SELOC manual
The recommended spark plug for the 1977 model, 7.5 hp Mercury outboard is a Champion L78V, or NGK BUHW-2. Both brands are Perma Gap type plugs, with the Champion being the manufacturer supplied plug back in 1977.
A 1977 model Eska outboard requires a 50:1 mixture, ( water cooled model.) The air cooled models use 32:1.
The oil / fuel ratio for the 1977 model, 85 hp Evinrude outboard, is 50:1, roughly one pint of 2 cycle oil, to six gallons of fuel.
We are looking to put a newer mercury on the boat, hoping that it weighs less or the same as the one we got. michaele.trotter@gmail.com
http://www.oldmercs.com/models2.htmThis site has almost every part for old mercurys. They are not obsolete! I just my 1977 9.8hp outboard all the time!

I emailed mercury for the year of an 50 hp outboard serial number 7098240 and this is the answer that I got and the email address of the man who answered it Charles, The engine is probably a 1977 Canada model. The serial numbers in the Mercury Marine publication guide are not precise. Thank you.
