I think between 20 and 30 years.

I heard of one that was 23, but not recognized by the media, in Florida. Ours is 20 (documented with AKC) and no one I know has ever heard of one over 18 other than ours -- and my wife is a vet nurse.

Our Shih-tzu, "Ladybug", turned 20 years old in January, 2010. She is AKC registered, so it's documented. Blind, and her back is a bit fused, but she still gets around and expects to be worshipped like a dowager princess.

We are not sure if this is a current record, but it's got to be close.

The Shih Tzu is an ancient royal dog. This breed is a native of Tibet and the word Shih Tzu means "Lion Dog" in Chinese. In ancient times this breed was very popular in Chinese royalty. It reached in the United States during 1950's and recognized by the AKC in 1969.
