If Communism is the extreme left of the political spectrum then the opposite is the extreme right. Dictatorship, absolute power by an autocracy, perhaps the best example is Nazi-ism, although some might suggest Reagans US administration. Certainly Communism & free trade or free enterprise to not sit easily together. I see communism & democracy as both being idealistic, unachievable states: Power to the people ! It just wont ever happen.

ANSWER:

Communism is social theory in response to the inhumanities of the industrial revolution. It was capitalism blamed for this pain and suffering and it is communism that offered itself as the opposite to capitalism. The capitalist seeks to own property. The communist seeks to prohibit private ownership of property. The capitalist seek to stave off government intrusion by asserting his natural rights as a freeborn person. The communist relies on a strong totalitarian form of government to control the means of production asserting that total government control is the only way to achieve a stateless society.

To the above answer, the Bolshevikist/Stalinist would argue that totalitarianism is necessary; most actual Marxists or Communists disagree. And, if we look at the actual communist policies that authoritarian socialist nations DID pursue (i.e., the U.S.S.R. and 1960's China), they did accomplish socialism and the beginnings of communism fairly well; it's sad that those accomplishments are marred by those nation's poor decisions and authoritarian government style. And to answer the question, communism is the epitome of sharing, where you and your neighbors would all operate as a single "family" or community, sharing the products of labor; unregulated corpocracy would be the exact opposite, with personal and corporate desires being the dominating feature.

Or simply the opposite of communism is capitalist.
