The chain of command for the Air Force is pretty straight forward. It starts at the bottom with 673d Air Base Wing, the 3rd Wing, the U.S. Army Alaska, Numbered Air Force, Pacific Air Forces, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Pacific Command, Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S Department of Defense, and finally, the Administration of the White House.

In the United States case, in the event that a emergency occurs that would require military rule, a military officer would probably be appointed at the state or federal level. If there is an emergency within a state that requires military rule, the states national guard would probably be activated in the event local law enforcement can't control a situation on their own. Every state national guard is usually commanded by either a brigadier general, major general, or rarely a lieutenant general. But the ultimate authority is the state governor unless the national guard burea is directed by a federal authority to fall under their juristiction. Active duty personnel can also be called into service if it's in the federal government's interest and/or the state authority (governor) asks for it. So depending on the situation the ultimate authority can be several different figures, which could even be all the way up to the President of the United States, as the supreme commander of the Armed Forces. So the general structure of any military branch starts with the president, then the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, then the secretaries of either the Air Force, Army, or Navy, followed by either the Army Chief of Staff, Air Force Chief of Staff, Chief of Naval Operations, and the Marine Corps Commandant. From there on down it can get very complicated with MAJCOM commanders, base commanders, unit commanders, national guard commanders, etc. etc.

What is the importance of the chain of command in the army?

Consider the chain of command an information superhighway. A hypothetical situation. General Howard's army is defending Paris, France from the Germans. Private Smith, on the front lines looks through his binoculars and sees thusands of Germans advancing. He notifies his segeant, he his captain, and so forth until it gets to the General (usually today in a matter of seconds. ) The general sends word back down through the chain of command to his subordinates to move the reserves to meet the enemy. Using the chain of command the general only has to concern himself with the battle, not all the other things that an army does. He doesn't need to wory about logistics, etc because somewhere down the chain of command is someone who will handle that for him. Using the chain of command the general only needs to tell his immediate subordinate for logistics what he wants. The word goes down and out to all those concerned and the job gets done. Information in the chain of command goes both ways. In the chain of command each link is necessary and vital. If one link is broken, the whole chain is broken. Hope I've helped you a little. Tim (old retired army sergeant)
