Well first the moon lines up with the sun at just the right angle and causes a shadow on Earth's surface. In the umbra (darkest part) of the shadow, the eclipse appears full. The moon entirely covers the sun. In the penumbra, The eclipse still happens but is not full.

The sequence of a solar eclipse is that the moon elapses at 22 minutes first, next the moon elapses at 1 hour and 9 minutes, then 1 hour and 16 minutes, and then 1 hour and 34 minutes, and the last elapsed time is 1 hour and 49 minutes. From- Amanda amondo
