1.Observe
2. Hypothesis
3. Background
4. Materials/procedure
5. Experiment/data collection
6. Analyze data
7. Draw conclusion
8. Make a new hypthesis
9. Variables !
First you ask yourself a testable question. Then you come up with a hypothesis for that question. Then you plan an experiment and some variables including the independent variable , the dependant variable and i cant remember what the third one was.... then after your experiment make observations and a conclusion. (note- middle school and elementary steps are a bit different.
2.Do background research.
3.Construct your hypothesis.
4.Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment.
5.Anaylze your data and draw your conclusion.
6.Report your results. (Was your hypothesis correct?)
Now you know how to do the Scientific Method! This one's good for a fight. You can get two answers as to whether the initial step is data collection or hypothesis formation. Each has its problems. If one simply starts off recording observations, they may never present a coherent picture; if one starts to investigation the proofs of a notion, he may insensibly screen out data that seems to contradict it.
The only way to guard against both possibilities is to start small. Instead of a complex system, try to think of a simple question, one in which not too much emotion is invested. If a number of data points seem to point towards an answer, formulate a slightly more comprehensive question and collect more data. Do this over and over until the weight of the observations drives one to a conclusion.
This is not to suggest that nobody ever made a scientific advance with a great leap of insight; they did. However, not only did many leaps of insight result in bunkum, but some of those we were taught didn't quite happen as we were told.
A scientists should form a hypothesis, then conduct an experiment.
A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses. More info in the link below.
