Peyton was originally an English surname derived from a place name meaning "Pœga's town". Pœga is an Old English name of unknown meaning.

The previously masculine Peyton, came into use as a girl's name after the character Peyton, played by actress Rebecca DeMornay, in the 1992 film "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle."
