I had always assumed the term GAS was an expansion on Alec Wilder's 1972 book "American Popular Song" which unexpectedly sold very well. Wikiepiedia oesn't identify it as the source of the term (it gives no source) but does give a lot of mention to Wilder's definitive book on the subject.

The Net has many sites that discuss the GAS but don't think any provide a source for the term. Most of them equate the term to what is also known as "standards."
