From about 1908-1912, it is a shortened form of the term "moving picture."

(Another theory is that the original use of the term "movies" was by residents of the little town of Hollywood, California. to refer to the people who were arriving from the east coast to make motion pictures beginning around 1908. They were unwelcome transients. This theory is not widely held, though, and does not appear in any etymological dictionaries.)
