It goes back to Latin ligo - ligare, to bind or tie. From this came the form ligatio - ligationem, meaning a tying or binding (e.g. with a bandage). Liaison is the French form which was borrowed into English, usually in the sense of a close relationship. To liaise - to get together, cooperate, exchange information

Ligature comes from the same root.

The word "liaison" originated from French in the late 17th century, derived from the Old French word "lier," meaning "to bind." It is used to describe a connection or communication between different groups or individuals.
