when you learn this pattern from a grammar book it looks like this:

the first is the bare verb (without to - infinitive)

the second is what you use with the simple past...yesterday I thought

the third is what you use in perfect tenses...I have thought...

learn them first, ask questions when you've got them off pat...best way...
