If someone commits suicide, there is little anyone can do, let alone the police.

Additional: If the questioner meant ATTEMPTED suicide - the police do not "punish" anyone.

However, (in the US) in most (all?) states the police do possess the power to exercise an emergency commitment petition/order and have someone who has attempted to do harm to themselves or others involuntarily committed to a hospital or mental insltitutuion for a certain period of time (set by law) so that they may undergo mental evaluation and treatment.

There really isn't one unless you endanger other people and they would like to press charges or, if you commit an already illegal Offense while attempting the suicide, in my opinion maybe it should be since technically you would be killing yourself.

Added: Suicide/attempted suicide is still a crime in only a few places. Where it is a crime, the state law would control the maximum/minimum penalties. However, this is a crime that is rarely prosecuted at all. When it is prosecuted, it is more likely that the court would seek to impose alternate punishment (such as mental illness or substance abuse treatment) rather than traditional punishments, like jail.

Eternal pain and suffering in hell.

This isn't always the case, nobody will ever know the consequences of suicide, at least while we are here.

Is suicide or attempted suicide against the law in Washington?

Suicide is not against the law, as there can be no human punishment for someone who has successfully committed it. Attempted suicide will not bring criminal charges against you, but you will most likely be taken in for psychological evaluation whether you want to be or not, and can be held until they feel you are no longer a threat to yourself or anyone else.....which could be days, weeks, months and sometimes years.
