Same as Beale Street in San Francisco....Edward F. Beale, a Lieutenant in the Navy (which is unusual in itself) in 1848 war with Mexico. most famous as an engineer and surveyor for building the Beale Road across the southwest to California from New Mexico using Camels in one part of it ( now old route 66) ...also was the first to send word back to Washington D.C. of the Sutter gold mine strike in California of 1848-starting the gold rush of 1849. Had amazing political and family connections at that time. May have tie-ins with the legendary Beale Treasure Code out of Virginia, but unknown. In fact all of this is " unknown", since most stories about Memphis Beale street say it was named after a forgotten or unknown Mexican War hero---but this is the only Mexican War" hero " out there named Beale, and was obviously well known in his day.
African Americans built the First Baptist Beale Street Church in Memphis, Tennessee. It was built right after the Civil War ended as a Negro Missionary Church.

Bakersfield is at the south end of San Joaquin Valley, and is north of Los Angeles and San Diego. While much of the San Joaquin Valley is rural and agricultural, Bakersfield has had huge population in recent years despite still relying heavily on agriculture and oil for the local economy. There has been a large number of houses and developments built in and near Bakersfield, and construction continues today. Areas around the city are still unincorporated and often rural, though this is changing as the city continues to grown and expand. Summers are typically hot, and winters rarely have snow. Transportation options include bus, train (Amtrak, located in the Mill Creek section of downtown), and air. Options for drivers are good, but Bakersfield is connected to the rest of California via freeways, but not via the highway. The bus systems include Golden Empire Transit and Kern Regional Transit. There are at least 15 high schools in Bakersfield, which is part of the Kern High School District, plus there are additional private high schools. Community colleges in Bakersfield include Bakersfield College. California State University also has a branch here, as does Kaplan College, Santa Barbra Business College, and University of LaVerne. Entertainment in Bakersfield can best be characterized by the country music that comes from the region, though there are also rock and gospel events as well that take place in the stadiums and theaters in the city. Outdoor activities include rock climbing, mountain biking, and white water rafting. There are a variety of groups that meet for outdoor sports and competitions including soccer, cycling, tennis, rugby, and water skiing. Downtown has 3 main districts: Arts, Civic Center, and Mill Creek. The Arts District is known for the galleries, theaters, and boutique hotels. The Civic Center has both government building and sporting centers, including Bakersfield Ice Sports Center and the McMurtrey Aquatic Center. Mill Creek is a hub of transportation, hosting the Amtrak (train) station. It also has the Beale Memorial Library (part of the Kern County Library System) and the Bakersfield Museum of Art.
