Function of the pineal body/gland is endocrine. This contributes the the alertness or consciousness of one's self and produces "melatonin" which regulates the sleep/wake patterns. The name derives from its shape.

It produces melatonin that helps to regulate sleep/wake functions, and even seasonal functions (e.g. more wakefulness and productivity in the summer, versus more restfulness - and, in some animals, hibernation - in the winter).

The pineal gland produces melatonin, a hormone that modulates wake/sleep patterns and sexual development. The pineal gland also has other functions in the endocrine system including regulation of that system.

It secretes a hormone that helps you relax and feel sleepy. It also alerts your body when it is time to wake up.

Because the pineal "gland" is the only unpaired brain structure, perhaps the pineal "gland" should ask, "What is the function of the rest of my brain?"

Pineal body produces melatonin which affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns.

Other than the above-mentioned function, it's probably responsible in enhancing the development of the gonads too - by influencing the output of gonadotrophins through the hypothalamus.

The primary role of the pineal gland is the productiton of the chemical melatonin which aids in regulation of your circadian rhythms (your body's natural clock which tells you when its time to wake up and time to sleep). Of course this gland and this chemical are only 2 parts of a very complex and incompletely understood sleep pathway.
