The play sweet charity is about a dancer at a hall called the Fandango Ballroom in New York, the girls name is Charity Hope Valentine. It is about her love-life basically. She then meets an Italian movie star Vittorio Vidal, who needs an escort into a club after his mistress walked out. Charity, having not eaten all day faints and is taken back to his apartment to 'lie down'. She is given multiple pieces of 'evidence' to show the girls at the ballroom that she really me this guy. His mistress them comes back and charity is shoved in a closet while they make love. She is escorted out by Vittorio in the morning. She then gets stuck in an elevator with a shy tax accountant called Oliver Lindquist, she finds out he isn't married and then goes to church with him when they are freed. She tells him that she works in a bank, but she later confesses that she is a dancer and he admits to following her and watching her dance. He tells her that he doesn't care and he wants to marry her. After a farewell party and the Fandango Ballroom, Charity and Oliver talk a walk in central park (the very place she was a the start of the play) oliver says he can't go through with the wedding and pushes her in the pond and runs. Charity surfaces and realizes that unlike Charlie, her ex-boyfriend, Oliver hasn't stolen her purse, she jumps out and reprises her song, I'm the Bravest individual'.
