Robbie Hart is a wedding singer with his bandmates George and Sammy. Robbie is engaged to his fiancee Linda who dumps him at the alter in a letter. He is heartbroken and refuses to work. Meanwhile cousin waitresses Holly and Julia (having worked at a wedding where Robbie was singing) hear of Robbie's distress but they have their own problems. Julia is worried that her boyfriend Glen won't 'pop the question' and Holly is beating off advances from her ex, Robbie's bandmate Sammy. Robbie is convinced to go back to work but messes up a wedding by singing of how 'love stinks.' Julia calms him down and the two become friends (by now Glen and Julia are engaged.) Robbie and Julia's feelings for each other become clearer to themselves and the people around them. The two are on the brink of telling each other how they feel when Linda returns, telling Robbie she can learn to deal with him being a wedding singer and not a rock star. Julia learns of Linda's return and flies to Vegas with Glen for a quick marriage (something the two-timing Glen has wanted to do all along.) Robbie tells Linda to leave, telling her he never wants to see her again. When Robbie learns of Julia's departure from Holly, he flies to Vegas to stop her. Meanwhile Holly and Sammy realise they love each other and get back together. Whilst on the plane to Vegas, Robbie learns that Glen and Julia are on the same plane and, with the help of Billy Idol, sings a self-written song to Julia 'I wanna grow old with you' and wins her over. The two marry, leaving an agry Billy Idol to deal with the cheating Glen.
The film stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and has also been turned into a Broadway musical which successfully ran from 2006-2009. It has now closed but is a popular show with amatuer companies. The musical differs slightly from the film, has more songs and the role of Robbie's grandma Rosie is extended in the musical. It is (in my opinion) superior and funnier to the film.
The duration of The Wedding Singer is 1.58 hours.
