Afghanistan was the operational base for the terrorist group Al Queda, which is beleived to be responsible for many terrorist attacks including the terror attacks the United States in 2001 which destroyed the World Trade Centre. Al Quaeda was supported by the Taliban who were the ruling government faction in Afghanistan.
The Purpose of the war was to destroy Al Queda and kill or capture its leaders.
