The region where the town of Kununurra, in far northwest Western Australia, now stands was originally explored by Alexander Forrest in 1879. He became the land agent for the entire Kimberley region (encompassing where Kununurra now stands), leasing over 51 million acres, the equivalent of 21 million hectares, in 1883. The first settler to the Kimberley region was Irish born Patrick (Patsy) Durack in 1882. The town itself was built as a result of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. The Ord River Dam was built to supply irrigation water to farms in the dry Kimberley region of the northwest.
