Pork pie hats are typically made of straw or felt with a cloth band around them. However the material is no so important as the shape which is a shallow hat usually 3-4 inches in height, like a top hat but really short in height.
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat was created in 1959.
A pork pie hat has a circular brim with a flat top. The top of the hat, while flat, has a distinctive crown shape.
British fashion influences continued, as was evidenced by the sensation created by the "pork-pie" hat's arrival in 1934. A low-crowned hat of the telescope type and made from felt, the porkpie was first worn by well-to-do men.

Chuck Mangione does NOT wear a pork pie hat. The pork pie hat has a very small brim. Chuck wears a fedora hat which has a much larger brim. Here is a direct quote from the description of The Best of Chuck Mangione album "With his distinctive flugelhorn tone and trademark fedora, Chuck Mangione rose from the jazz scene to the pop charts in the '70s....."
Buster Keaton did wear the pork pie hat which was associated with men.

A Shepherds' Pie made with pork mince would still be called Shepherds Pie. If one is quite meticulous, one might call it "Pork Mince Pie." I would call it "Curly Tail Pie".
Mostly Pork Pie hats and Gamblers. He also dons an occasional fedora.
There are many different types of pork pie. These types of pie include the "Common Pie", the "Melton Mowberry Pork Pie" and also the "Artisan Pork Pie".
Great question. I believe Michael Kitchen wore two different hats as he played the role of Christopher Foyle. In the earlier episodes, he wore a flat-topped "pork pie" felt hat with a "stingy" [narrow] brim; that hat was unusual in that it didn't have the usual pork-pie hat circular ridge on the crown. I've spent too much time searching for a hat like this. Pork pie hats are available in felt but have, well, pizazz that the Foyle hat avoids. "Bucket" hats have a similar outline but are made only in canvas and other casual materials. In later episodes, Foyle wore a traditional felt fedora.
