In 1817, during the First Seminole War, it was General Andrew Jackson who, charged by President Monroe with the mission of destroying the Native threat, took to the offense against the Seminoles in the Spanish territory of Florida in a violent and successful manner. Among other victories achieved by his direct command or at his orders, Jackson oversaw the conquest of both Pensacola and Fort Gadsden (in present-day Franklin County, Florida) during this conflict.
