They landed on a small island in the present-day Bahamas which Columbus claimed for Spain and named San Salvador.
Columbus first landed on an island he named San Salvador in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. While he did explore several locations in the Caribbean, La Navidad, which he established on Hispaniola, was not his first landing. The "ragged islands" likely refer to the islands he encountered during his journey, but San Salvador is recognized as his initial landing site.
Sea of Tranquility
San Salvador is believed to be the site of the first landfall.
Landing site coordinates: 0.647° N latitude, 23.505° E. longitude.
Legend has it that Kupe's first New Zealand landing point was the Hokianaga Harbour, Northland.
The exact landing site of Columbus is a matter of some dispute, but it was probably the island of Hispaniola.
The exact location of Columus's first landing site is in dispute. His biographer claims to have recounted from Columus's journal the island was called Lucayos. In any event, most historians agree that he landed on one of the islands in the Bahamas.
Veracruz
The first landing spot on the moon was called the Sea of Tranquility, or Mare Tranquillitatis in Latin. It was chosen as the landing site for the Apollo 11 mission, which successfully landed the first humans on the moon in 1969.
Any flat piece of land would make a good landing site.
