The word 'quiet' is an adjective or a noun and not a verb e.g. "The night was quiet" (adjective) or "He was surrounded by the quiet of the night" (noun). The verb is quieten e.g. "He wishes to quieten the students" (present tense). The past tense is quietened e.g."They were quietened by the entrance of the teacher"
