What is the priority of religion over ethics?

A:Until the Age of Enlightenment, religion always had priority over ethics. All possible means were used to bring pagans into the Church, abolish 'heresy' (dissension)

whenever it arose, and enrich the Church. All kinds of sins have been committed on behalf of the Church or by the clergy for their own personal satisfaction.

In modern times, various religious leaders have sought to oppose the teaching of ethics in schools, partly because they say the teaching of ethics ought to entirely unnecessary if children learn about religion. However, modern society says that moral behaviour and ethics should be our priority, and religion should not have automatic priority if it can not deliver those goals.
