No , on the Ford Ranger 2.3 L and 2.5 L with 2 spark plugs per cylinder , 1 spark plug fires on the power stroke of the engine cylinder and the 2nd spark plug fires on the exhaust stroke of the engine cylinder to reduce emissions

Its an 8 cylinder motor. Answer The 2.5 L - 4 cylinder engine used in the 1999 Ford Ranger has a twin plug ignition system , two spark plugs per cylinder , one plug fires for combustion , the second plug fires on the exhaust to achieve lower emissions
check your coil make it is firing both cylinders alternate plug wires to see if opposite cyl is firing if so is a safe bet that coil is the problem
You either need to replace the coil pack or the distributor cap which ever the model has and fit new spark plugs and wires.
Tachometers count the number of times the ignition fires the cylinders, so a tach from a four cylinder will work on a four cylinder motorcycle. on a two cylinder it will read 50% low.
