Sedimentory rocks form in several stages, which are: weathering, errosion, sedimentation, cementation and at the end lithification. In case of formation of metamorphic rocks, rock of any origin altered in mineralogical composition, chemical composition, or structure by heat, pressure, and movement. Nearly all such rocks are crystalline.
Sedimentary Rocks. Sedimentary rocks are created from stratification by the layering of materials on one another which then get compacted and cemented by sedimentation process over long period of time. The whole process of formation of sedimentary rocks from sediment is called Diagnesis. Examples of sedimentary rocks are limestone, chalk, and sandstone.
Metamorphic rocks were originally igneous or sedimentary rocks. They were altered by being involved in an episode of mountain building, buried deep and subjected to immense pressures and temperatures. In effect they were the roots of the mountains. Later erosion over millions of years removed most of the mountains leaving the altered rocks for us to see.
