What are the causes of transposition of the great arteries?

means all the major arteries of the heart are attached essentially backwards... which is bad... usually leads to death very very quickly after birth, but after the mustard procedure was invented in the 70's it has been used as an open heart procedure to fix the problem. and the patients can live a normal life... however its important that in later years if a heart problem does eventually arise that the current Dr. know of the procedure and transposition. Actually the above answer is correct for D-TGA (simple transposition of the great arteries). In L-TGA the lower vetricles are reversed, the heart itself is structurally abnormal, the arteries corrected and are coming off the opposite ventricle, in other words the right atrium feeds the left ventricle (sitting on the right side of the heart) and vise versa. The problem is while circuation can occur the heart is pumping from the wrong parts, and will eventually fail. Also these kids have rhythm problems (needing drugs and pacemakers) and many other anomolies like a PDA (hole between the ventricles) and coarction of the aorta. The surgery to correct this complex problem is called a double switch procedure sometimes with an atrial baffle. The other option is a transplant.
