A coccyx is the end of your spine (tail bone; well actually 3, 4 or 5 bones that are part fused together). It helps you sit down comfortably by providing a third point of impact and lots of muscles and tendons attach to it such as those controlling your pelvic floor muscles which help you know when to go to the toilet and those that help you walk.

The tail bone, or Coccyx, is just left over bones from when we were primates in the early years of human evolution. There is actually no physical function of the tail bone in humans. This is because it is the remains of what was primate tails, the same our ancestors had. Because we evolved from creatures similar to a monkey, we have similar features that modern day monkeys have. They have a tail now, so we have what is left of a tail; not enough to create a tail, but enough to show we evolved from primates.

Hope this helped!

The coccyx is what remains of a vestigial tail in humans from the time when our far-gone ancestors were classed as monkeys. We lost these tails around the periods where we evolved into apes.

It is still not completely useless, however. It still serves as an attachment for various tendons, ligaments and muscles. Including one of our most important tendons which stretches along our entire spine.

The coccyx also acts as a "weight bearing tripod" which acts as a support for humans and other apes when they are sitting down. Weight is also transferred to the coccyx to support humans and apes when they lean backwards.

A tailbone is at the bottom of your spin and it can be broken and can be very painful.
