First of all, what is a serial killer. Experts don't agree on an exact definition of a serial killer but general definitions are based on numbers and patterns: two or more unrelated victims in distinctly separate incidents. Serial killers wear the mask of sanity. Down inside they suffer from Antisocial Personality Disorder and appear normal or charming. That mask of sanity has gotten of people dead or badly wounded. Also serial killers are at work continually changing their targets and methods.

This theory could apply when dealing with serial killers but the theory could involve anyone in particular. American psychologist Henry Murray developed the theory. These psychogenic needs function mostly on the unconscious level, but play a major role in our personality. He starts with the primary needs followed by the secondary needs. Then comes the ambitions needs. Materialistic needs come next. The next part is one that in investigating serial killers comes in handy. It is called the power needs. One of the topics of this need is Dominance or controlling others. As the next one deals with affection needs. The last need is the information need.

Studying this theory has revealed that people with a high need for achievement tend to select more challenging tasks. This is why profilers learn the theory.
