There is no purpose. It is believed by some religions that a consciousness survives from life to life and that the life form that this consciousness enters at a new birth is dependent upon how a person lived their past life. So if you were a good person in this life you would attain a high rebirth in the next life as a reward. If you were a bad person in this life you would be reborn as a lower life form, maybe as a mammal or a fish, etc
The concept here is that regardless of the life form that the consciousness is in, you should live that life as best as you can, with the end goal of attaining perfect wisdom.
