I am about ready to this on my 2004 Escalade. I am purchasing Split backing plate so I shouldn't have to pull the rear axle. I will loosen the 4 bolts that hold the axle and the backing plate in place. Once loose enough, I will cut out the old backing plate, shouldn't be too hard as they are already rotted substantially. You may very likely have bent the thin metal backing plate behind the brake rotor. That will cause the backing plate to rub against the rotor and make an awful grinding noise. Its not too hard to reform the backing plate away from the rotor.
