He might be from a different geographical area or have a very different background than the presidential candidate. Sometimes a vice-presidential candidate is chosen from a state with a lot of votes that he can deliver for the president. Of course the vice-president is "only a heart-beat away from the presidency", so it is important to run someone that could step in and be a good president.
