When any president's campaign gives you the chance to meet and have dinner with him, it is often to encourage donations. Whether it is right or wrong, all presidents have done this. Sometimes, certain campaigns will hold a contest where a supporter can win dinner, but in general, dinners with the president are for fund-raising. That said, presidents also have many different kinds of dinners, including meetings with world leaders when a formal meal is served, or strategy meetings where members of congress come to the White House to discuss policies and also have dinner.
