The purpose is to get soldiers and equipment ashore where no harbor exists, as enemy harbors will be heavily defended and nearly impossible to capture, and invasion ships draw too much water to land forces on a beach. Because the landing craft are able to operate in very shallow water, they can take ground forces from the ships and quickly place them directly on a beach.
A "Pier". A pier is a landing stage built out to sea as mentioned above to allow boats or sea craft to reach main land, allowing people or goods to be taken of the sea craft on land.
There are many different types of landing craft, and many of them were used in the amphibious assault on Normandy.
