Both meiosis and mitosis are types of cell divisions. Meiosis occurs in germ cells or reproductive cellswhile mitosis occurs in both reproductive cells and body or somatic cells. The former is called as reduction dision as it results in reduction of total number of chromosomes in the daughter cells, in order to maintain a constant chromosome number thereby race is maintained. The latter is called as multiplication division or replica division as the two daughter cells produced resembles the parent cells. Mitosis occurs in order to favour growth and differentiation of an organism.

Meiosis is a procedure that increases genetic variation. The purpose of meiosis is to reduce the normal ratio amount of diploid cells to haploid cells, that are called gametes.
