What is the purpose of the Boot Sequence option available in most computers?

The boot sequence allows you to specify which device the computer should attempt to boot from and in which order.
You would normally expect to boot from the hard disk, however if you had trouble, you can get a rescue cd/dvd and tel the computer to boot from that in preference, alowing you to get onto the system and fix the problem.
It is possible to boot from floppy disks, hard disks, cds, dvds, USB sticks, and possible other devises as well.

∙ 6y agoA boot sequence is the point between you pressing the on button and using your operating system. The computer has to load the BIOS which then looks into the stored memory and retrieves the OS into ram so you can use it. The boot menu allows you to change the OS windows to ubuntu/mint/mac as well as being essential to upgrade some versions, can be used to fix registry, you can not work on essential OS files within the OS. Repair CDs boot into an OS on the CD to allow you to fix it, if there was no bios or it was fixed this would not be possible. It also allows you to install multiple OSes on the same computer and choose between them each time you turn them on. This is why when resuming from a hibernated laptop presents an error restarting can fix it as this reloads the OS files, often losing the problem.
----Note the above does not apply to Vista hybrid boot as the name is a misnomer, the correct technical term would be log-off and hibernate and resume and log on. Boot has a very precise technical meaning. Resuming is not booting nor is turning on a computer
