To perseve life and property at sea. To enforce polution laws. To conduct boardings of vessels at sea for safety and law violations. To ensure Aids to Navigations (Bouys) are in proper location and operating so vessels can travel safely. To operate Loran stations to help vessels know their location. To help defent the country against foes domestic and abroad. For some the purpose of the Coast Guard is to further their education or learn a new trade.
