∙ 14y agoThe permanent home of the US Supreme Court is simply called the United States Supreme Court Building, or the Supreme Court Building.
The first Court convened at the Merchant's Exchange Building in New York in 1790. The following year, it moved to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, which was then the US Capitol.
When the Federal government was established in Washington, DC, the Supreme Court moved into a small room in the basement of the Capitol Building.
In 1810, it moved to more spacious accommodations on the ground floor of the Capitol, now known as the Old Supreme Court Chamber. In 1814, British soldiers fighting the US in the War of 1812 set fire to many government buildings in Washington, including the Old Supreme Court Chamber. The Justices met in a house for several years until the Chamber was restored.
In 1860, the Court moved into what is now known as the Old Senate Chambers, where it remained until Chief Justice (and former President) William Howard Taft convinced Congress to allocate funds for a building specifically designed for the Court. Unfortunately, Taft died before construction was completed in 1935.
The US Supreme Court Building stands at the corner of First and East Capitol Streets, N.E., in Washington DC. It is open to the general public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm.

∙ 13y agoFrom 1800-1935 US Supreme Court occupied various quarters in the US Capitol Building, which is home to Congress. In 1929, then-Chief Justice William Howard Taft successfully argued before Congress that the Supreme Court should occupy its own building to formally demonstrate its existence as an independent branch of government. In addition, the Capitol facilities were inadequate because they lacked private chambers (offices) for the justices' use, forcing them to work in their own homes when writing opinions.
