Mantra comes from the word ‘man’ mind, ‘tra’ instrument, therefore, a mantra is an instrument to calm the mind. Just like we use other instruments, like writing instruments, hearing instruments, the mantra is another instrument that is meant to silence the mind. When we repeat a mantra, when we use the power of a mantra, we silence the mind, we reduce the MTR, the Mental Thought Rate, which can normally be upto fifty thousand thoughts a day, fifty thoughts a minute. The repetition of a mantra reduces the MTR. The benefit is peace, bliss, overcoming worry, stress, and anxiety. Therefore, many people use the help of a mantra to meditate.
The purpose of a mantra during meditation is to help focus the mind and promote relaxation. By repeating a specific word or phrase, it can provide a point of concentration and help quiet the mental chatter, allowing for a deeper state of mindfulness and presence.

Purpose of mantra during meditation:If two thoughts try to enter the conscious mind at precisely the same time it leads to competitive blockade. Because of this blockade not only these two thoughts but even other thoughts can't enter our conscious mind. This result in abolition of all movements, emotions, feelings and thoughts. Thus, we get false peace and false self-control.In meditation we use mantra to block unwanted thoughts.
Mantra, thus, makes us self-disciplined.
Since mantra is intimately connected with breathing we can use it to alter skeletal muscle tone. Since every god is a particular tone of our skeletal muscular system, using different mantras we can appease the god of our choice.
The purpose of the mantra during meditation is ratify rituals and improve concentration.

Your First Meditation To begin meditating, find a place where you can sit comfortably and quietly. Then close your eyes and do nothing for a minute or so. Thoughts may come during that time, and that is okay. Then start the audio below and play your mantra** at a whisper. Each time you hear your mantra, say it quietly inside without moving your tongue or lips. After one minute the audio will fade to silence. Then continue saying your mantra quietly inside for four more minutes. If thoughts come during that time, gently return to saying your mantra quietly inside. The audio will tell you when four minutes is over. Follow this instruction for your first meditation only.
