The answer is in the preceding and following verses, which refer to 'walking in the Spirit', which man cannot do by sight and at home in the body'. Hence the 'parenthetical' verse: (We walk by faith, not by sight:)

By faith we understand that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and so we may discern the things of God in The Bible which we may not understand simply by sight.
