A set of gears provides a method to change the torque from a rotating object, such as the output shaft of a motor or engine, and either reduce the rate of rotation in exchange for an increase in torque (geared down), or increase the rate of rotation in exchange for a decrease in torque (geared up).

This is useful for a number of reasons. First of all many motors when hooked up to an electrical power source rotate at a very high speed and the desired rate of rotation is usually lower so the output from the motor is geared down. Secondly, motors are most efficient usually at a certain rate of rotation around 20% or so of the free speed (motor's output shaft rate of rotation with no load), and motors provide the most power at 50% of free speed. Using gears can help to achieve max power or max efficiency.

Planetary gearing is also known as Epicyclic gearing. It is a gearing system consists of external and central gears. External gears are also known as planet gears while internal gear is referred as sun gear. Planetary gears for different purposes i.e. for reducing speed, to produce different ratios of gearing, etc.

What type of gear is a bike?

Pretty much all bikes qualify as chain and sprocket gear systems, and the ones with internal gears also have planetary gears inside their hubs. There are also two systems available that puts planetary gears in the crank assembly. Well, if it has an internally geared hub it has a more or less complicated set of planetary gears(depending on the no of gears). If it has experna gears then it has front set of sprockets and a rear set of sprockets. By running the chain over these sprockets in different combinations you get different ratios that can be used depending on how hard the rider wants to pedal.

Brief explanation of epicyclic gear train?

Epicyclic gearing or planetary gearing is a gear system consisting of one or more outer gears, or planetgears, revolving about a central, or sun gear. Typically, the planet gears are mounted on a movable arm or carrierwhich itself may rotate relative to the sun gear. Epicyclic gearing systems also incorporate the use of an outer ring gear or annulus, which meshes with the planet gears. Planetary gears (or epicyclic gears) are typically classified as simple and compound planetary gears. Simple planetary gears have one sun, one ring, one carrier, and one planet set. Compound planetary gears involve one or more of the following three types of structures: meshed-planet (there are at least two more planets in mesh with each other in each planet train), stepped-planet (there exists a shaft connection between two planets in each planet train), and multi-stage structures (the system contains two or more planet sets). Compared to simple planetary gears, compound planetary gears have the advantages of larger reduction ratio, higher torque-to-weight ratio, and more flexible configurations.

How does oversize tires affect your vehicle transmission?

Increasing tire size from the OEM tires will increase the stress load induced on the driveline. The planetary gears and carriers have to work harder than they were designed for and that creates a problem that leads to premature wear on planetary gears and on many other Automatic transmission components alike.

How did the aerostar awd transfer case work was it viscous?

I believe that it is a planetary transfer case with an internal clutch pack, that delivers 30% of the engine torque to the front wheels, allowing for slip for cornering. When the van is driving normally, the planetary gears rotate as a unit but if the rear wheels start to slip, the planetary gears start to turn out of sync with the rest, a sensor detects this motion, and an electric solenoid locks the clutch pack together. After four seconds the solenoid releases, and if the tires slip, the cycle starts again.
