The trachea itself is the smooth muscle. It provides a pathway lined with cilia (microscopic hairs that prevent dust and debris from entering the lungs) that allows air to be filtered and delivered to the bronchioles and from the bronchioles to the alveoli. There, the oxygen diffuses across the alveolar membranes and into the bloodstream while simultaneously ridding the body of carbon dioxide waste.

To aid the flow of blood. Smooth muscle helps push the blood just like our intestines push food. The heart does a fantastic job of pushing blood through our body, but smooth muscle helps in areas that are far away from the heart.
