A band of muscles at the opening of the stomach called the Cardiac (due to its proximity to the heart) Sphincter.

The cardiac sphincter is located at the top of the stomach and controls the direction of food passing through the esophagus so that no food will re enter the esophagus. The Pyloric sphincter stops bile and digested food from entering the stomach, this valve is located at the bottom of the stomach.
It is a surgery that takes part of the upper part of the stomach and wraps it around the esophagus. The purpose is to strengthen the valve there and help prevent stomach acid from coming up.
Actually The small intestine is not connected to the stomach. Between the stomach and the small intestine is the Duodendum. At the end of the small intestine the colon, or large intestine begins.
The small intestine is situated between and continuous with the stomach and the large intestine.
