Prefixes make it much much easier to understand. The prefix tells how many digits the unit has. So it is both easy to convert and understand. :)

Example:

1 gigabyte is easier to read than 1000000000 bytes

Prefixes are used in the metric system to show an easy categorisation of different dimensions. For example, a kilometre refers to one thousand metres; ten kilometres is easier to say/write/calculate with than ten thousand metres - it is for convenience.

It enables us to use base10, or powers of ten instead of using different names.

Example: pounds to ounces

The prefixes in the metric system are numbers. Kilo means thousand. A kilometer means a thousand meters. Milli means one thousanth. So a millimeter means one thousandth of a meter. The same thing happens with all measures. A kilowatt means a thousand watts. A decaliter means ten liters. A kiloliter means a thousand liters. People learning the metric system only need to learn one set of prefixes. In the United States confusion can exist when the same terms are used for dry measure and liquid measure but the sizes are different. How many dry quarts are in a hogs head? The metric system does not have that problem.

In the metric systems, unlike other systems, there is only one unit for each measurement; e.g the only unit for length is the metre. For lengths much longer, or shorter lengths we use prefixes to indicate the fraction or multiple of the metre.

For short lengths the fractions are thousandths, millionths, billionths; for which the prefixes are milli-, micro-, and nano-.

For longer lengths, the multiples are thousands, millions, and billions; for which the prefixes are kilo-, mega-, and giga-.

The prefixes indicate the fraction or the multiple of the base unit.
