The purpose of the Fifth Amendment is to ensure that the rights of those on trial are protected. This is done through making certain a defendant has protecting from double jeopardy, does not have to testify against themselves, does not have their property taken by the state, is tried by a grand jury in "infamous" cases, and will not be punished without "due process of law".
