As of 08/2011 the highest auction prices are for an 1869 United States Note. Circulated ones go for $500 to $1200 depending on condition, while uncirculated ones are around $4000.
FWIW, there are no truly rare modern (i.e. 1928 and later) $2 bills. The only one that cracks 4 figures is the 1928 B issue which sells for about $1000 in uncirculated condition.
To set the record straight based on research, the highest-value $1 bill is an 1880 brown-seal United States Note, with values up to $3500 in uncirculated condition. The highest-value standard bill of any denomination is open to debate depending on the bill's condition, but the maximum that I could find in my guides was a 1928 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note that has a current price of $30,000 to $45,000 in circulated condition and over $70,000 uncirculated. The absolute highest bill is the 1934 $100,000 gold certificate issued only for intragovernmental use. Only a handful were printed and they were never used in general circulation. Most are in museums but private sales have been in excess of $75,000. The other guy was wrong, the two dollar bill isn't the rarest dollar bill. There is actually A bunch of two dollar bills but just dollar freaks would keep them. they are only worth two dollars so might as well spend it. The rarest dollar is 1899 Silver Certificate, Black Eagle 1 Dollar bill, worth around $125 -$150 which is pretty expensive and the rarest so Good Luck! :)
