The reason for Ireland having a government is democracy, so the current government (March 2013) are there because the Irish people elected them in 2011. It is a coalition of Fine Gael and Labour. An Irish government can stay in power for up to 5 years before a new election is needed. This government could be in power until 2016. If the people wanted to, they could re-elect them then. It is also possible for a government to call an election at any time, so the next Irish General Election could be before 2016.
