There are 22 vertebral discs in the spine that act as shock absorbers for the nerve system, as well as to separate the two vertebrae that they are located between. When all is working as it should the spinal nerves and the spinal cord will protected and function as they should.

If a spinal disc becomes thinner than it should, and loses its normal height, it will not function well to absorb shock and it will allow the two bones it is placed between to come closer together. This will allow the spinal nerves to receive more impact and shock from normal daily activity and it will make the normal nerve passageway for the spinal nerve smaller than it should be. These changes allow nerve compression to occur, and this can cause pain and other symptoms like numbness, weakness and and muscle spasm. The pain that is felt can be pain near the spine where the disc is thinner or the pain can occur anywhere along its length, or both.

What does there is mild disc desiccation with minimal to mild loss of the disc height mean?

This is the official pathology report description of mild intervertebral disc degeneration. The "mild dessication" means the disc appears slightly drier than normal, which can be related to a mild breakdown in the squishy cushion portion of the disc. The "mild loss of disc height" simply means the disc is not as tall as it used to be, again probably a result of mild degeneration. Disc degeneration is a normal artefact of aging - everyone's intervertebral discs will go through some degree of degeneration if they live long enough. However, disc degeration is considered to be the first step towards a herniated or ruptured disc, which can cause severe back pain and require surgery to correct. If I were in your shoes and had been given this information by a doctor, I would ask what it means in practical terms. What are my risks of a herniated disc in the next five years? Will this impact nerve function? What are signs and symptoms that this disc is deteriorating? Is there anything I need to do about this - change posture, wear a brace, etc?

What is rudimentary disc?

A rudimentary disc is an underdeveloped disc in the vertebral column. Rudimentary discs can cause constant back pain or neck pain depending on the area of the disc.

Why do people with lower back pain decide to have a spinal surgery?

I do think, that the main reason is severe pain caused by herniated disc. If any ideas, please, share here.

What is multilevel disc desiccation?

Multilevel disc desiccation is a health condition of the spine. This health condition or disease is the loss of fluid between the discs of the spine. This fluid or jelly acts as cushion for the spine against pain. Multilevel disc desiccation is a degenarative disease.

How does a ruptured disc work?

A ruptured disc does not work very well. The disc is between two vertebrae and provides padding between the two also a little movement. A ruptured disc is also called a herniated disc. The two vertebrae often come in contact then and can actually pinch the nerves coming off the court. This can produce a lot of pain and loss of muscle function.

does taking pain meds cause hearing loss ?

do pain meds cause hearing loss

What is a herinated disc?

Many patients with back pain, leg pain , or weakness of the lower extremity muscles are diagnosed with a herinated disc. When a disc herination occurs, the cushion that sits between the spinal vertebra is pushed out of it's normal position. A herinated disc would not be a problem if it wasn't for the spinal nerves which is very close to the edge of the spinal discs.

What are some herniated disc symptoms?

The symptoms of a herniated disc will be different from time to time it depends on the location and the position of the disc. If you have constant pain in your lower back you may have a herniated disc.

Can lower back pain be a symptom of a spinal abscess?

Yes, a spinal abscess can a cause of lower back pain, and would certainly be considered a reason to seek emergency medical care.In addition to low back pain, a spinal abscess could also cause any of the following:Sudden loss of bladder or bowel controlSudden loss of motor control of the legs (marked weakness)Sudden loss of sensory awareness (numbness, tingling, loss of all feeling)FeverThrobbing pain on movement or weight bearing

What is protrusions?

Spondylosis is pain and degeneration of the spine. A spondylitic protrusion is the disc tissue that has displaced beyond the disc space.

Do disc bulge go away?

This is caused by age and loss of bone thickness. Think of making 's'mores. The marshmallow is pushed out by the two crackers. Pain meds will help but over time things will get worse.

What is a t10-t11 disc bulge and what does it affect?
