I am a mother of 3 children and I have breastfed all 3 of them. Being that I am not a mental health couselor, a Pediatrician or any other Medical/Health professional who has the knowledge behind them, I can not say how long is too long to breastfeed. I can say as a breastfeeding mom, both currently and with my two older daughters, I was comfortable breastfeeding until my 1st born was 15 months, my 2nd was 14 months and my 3rd who is 14 months and is still breastfeeding. I am not sure how long I plan on breastfeeding my son. I, like some of the others who have written in, did not plan on breastfeeding this long. I knew it was going to be tough to break my son as it was with both my daughters. My son only breastfeeds at nap/bed time, which is 3-4 times a day. I can definetly say that there is absolutely no sexual pleasure from breastfeeding. I think when people use that statement, that is going a bit too far. My husband wants me stop breastfeeding because he wants "his" boobs back. I would also like to wean my son. He feeds himself and drinks from a big boy cup. He has never been on a bottle, no will he be.I think with my son it's a matter of comfort. He wants to be held and comforted before nodding off to sleep. I don't do bottles, so don't offer the bottle or "put it in a cup" nonsense. It's just like being snuggled by your loved one when you were a kid. Some of us still do that with our spouses. It gives you a sense of warmth and safety. I can't imagine having my son cry himself to sleep beacuase I want to wean him. Haven't any of you adults cried yourselves to sleep after fighting with a loved one? Doesn't feel to good does it? The bottom line is : it's your child and to each his own, but when your child whips out your breast across the dinner table it's time to start weaning. It is a very hard thing to do. I am in that boat right now. My choice, no one elses.

As long as milk is removed from the breast, more will be produced to replace it.

With that, the More milk is taken, (and the quicker it is taken) the faster it will be produced to replace that taken.

breastmilk does not suddenly just stop being made over night.

The number of months generally recommended as a minimum to exclusively breast feed is six months. And while you are giving your child a tremendous help and boost in starting life with this first six months of breastfeeding, the simple fact is that the longer you nurse the more good you do for your child. Don't listen to the nonsense put out by some people that extended nursing can somehow damage your child. Give your child the very best by breast feeding. Your breast is not just a source of nutrition, the bonding and emotional strengthening will help your child through the rest of their life.
